Hi ValueMD,
I'm new to the site but have gained some incredible insights by browsing the forum already. I'm applying to SGU's Premedical Program year 3, with a hope of starting in January 2016. I was wondering if anyone else on here applying to the premedical program? Does anyone know how competitive their premed program is to be accepted into. And has anyone successfully gone thru this program and matriculated to being an MS1. I'd love to hear your stories of applying!

Thanks, Matt

So I got accepted to the SGU MPH/MD dual degree, Ross Merp, and Saba. I am trying to decide where I should go.
I wanted to ask if you guys believe the SGU MPH/MD program will untimely help me in the end when matching for residencies. I am also worried that the program will get exhausting because I will be working on the MPH program during my summers.

What are your opinions and do you have any advice for me on what path to take?

Thanks!

The AOA/ACGME Merger and SGU

Hi,

This is my first time posting here, so sorry if it is the wrong forum.

I am a Canadian applicant, and have applied and recieved an interview invite from SGU. I have done a bit of poking around and discovered that there is a AOA/ACGME merger that has recently gone through. There seems to be little recent info on ValueMD about how that will affect Carib grads for residency. What can you people tell me?

St. Georges and other Caribbean Universitties vs INTO SGUL London

Hi everyone.

I am new here and have been researching med schools for a while now. I am an Indian citizen who has completed BSc. (Hons) from a UK university and am interested in pursuing medical education. I was awarded a 2:2 degree so my options were very limited to get into standard universities in UK. During my research I stumbled upon medical schools in the Caribbean and after a lot of searching narrowed down the choices to 2. St. Georges University has a brilliant track record of graduating doctors and placing them in the system. Considering that I am an International students and would have difficulties in getting accepted in to a residency, I decided to look at the INTO St. Georges university of London programme too. The SGUL INTO programme is good considering the St. Georges prestigious degree but since its a new course I am not too sure about it. Also, after graduating, I would face the same problems of gaining a residency in America and they also say that getting accepted in to a FY1 training is also not guaranteed since I am not a EU national.

I am very confused as to which school shall I go to. Any opinions or advise would me much appreciated.

Thanks all.

SGU Charter Foundation Program Jan 2016

Hey guys,

Since there was a thread going for August 2015, I figured I would make a new one for those of us accepted for the next term.

I've gathered as much info as I possibly could about Foundations from the online forums. PM me if you have any questions or wanna talk about it in general. There's another thread I didn't make over at SDN (the place we don't post as much since they can be on the snarky side about certain things..). It's under this same title- a current student on there gave a ton of good info and answered a lot of questions.

I was thinking of making a Facebook group to connect with fellow classmates, ask questions and exchange resources if enough people were interested, though we will have class-specific Facebook study groups through DES anyway. But you know.. the memes.

Looking forward to seeing you all in January and working extremely hard to become doctors!

St. Georges University student health insurance info for the January 2016 class

There was a question yesterday here as well as in the 2016 Facebook group about whether one should sign up for the SGU policy or opt out. Being that January will be my first term at SGU, I can't speak on the quality of of the policy and honestly, I hope that I will not have cause to use it. However, should something happen, I feel much better knowing that I will have coverage. I have attached some information that I received after I enrolled in the plan and it may help you make your decision(s) regarding whether or not to enroll in the plan. One of the features that I like is that when you are back in the states, your provider network is the United Healthcare PPO; I currently work for United Healthcare / Optum and can attest to the quality and responsiveness of the PPO. On the other hand, pharmacy benefits are covered in the states by Optum Rx and they are probably the most problematic aspect of the health plan. I get at least three calls a day from members who are having issues with getting a prescription approved.

If you should decide to opt out of the schools policy, make sure that whatever policy you choose will provide a comparable level of coverage, particularly when you are studying in Grenada or England. Given that I work for UHC and have cousins who currently work for Aetna, I can tell you that both companies have some decent policies that are comparable to the schools policy but you won't be saving much as compared to the schools policy (~$50 to $100 month). There are a lot of lower cost alternatives but not all meet SGU's minimum coverage standards and many have very limited international and/or out-of-network benefits. If you choose one of these policies, you may find yourself on the receiving end of significant medical costs should you need to use your health plan.

Other points about the school sponsored plan:

  • Your Physician and Hospital In-Network Benefits are administered, along with pharmacy benefits, by Worldwide Expatriate Association ("WEA"), our General Managing Underwriter.
  • True Blue Pharmacy and ********'s Pharmacy in Grenada also have independent arrangements with the company.
  • Your Health Insurance ID # will be issued directly by WEA via email. Please monitor your SGU email account.
  • Once your ID and logon is issued, you will need to set up an account and print your ID card at: www.weadirect.com. The WEA website is extremely comprehensive and user friendly. This website will serve as the most valuable tool with value-added features such as: electronic submission of claims, product information, verification of benefits, and much more.
  • The cost of the 7 month policy is $1,285.00 in addition to a student health insurance facilitation fee of $100. If you have enrolled a dependent(s) on the plan, this will come through as a separate charge on your student account. These amounts will be reflected on your next statement from the Office of Student Finances. This policy charge is non-refundable.
  • All students studying in Grenada will be automatically enrolled in a separate Air Evacuation Plan and the cost of $125 will be charged to the student's account.

1 Question for all who have done Charter!

I have a question for anyone who's done the Charter program. I'm doing MSAP right now which is SGU's 5 week online course that covers a large chunk of material in Charter. If you pass you go to Term 1 and I'm pretty sure I will pass. However a lot of people I've talked to who've done Charter said they wouldn't have survived Term 1 without it and it was a highly difficult yet invaluable experience. Some others have advised me that the Charter students do very well. I also thought doing it would give me time this summer to try and get more research experience in. I was wondering if you think it would be beneficial to do Charter given I have the choice, or more of a waste of time/money. If you had the choice in the beginning to start with Term 1 or Charter would you still do Charter? Any opinions are welcome. I just want to confirm my decision.

One way vs. Round trip ticket to Grenada

This question is for current SGU students. Does anyone know if we have to purchase a round trip ticket to Grenada or will a one way suffice? My admissions letter doesn't have this information and I haven't found anything on the schools website. I sent my admissions advisor this question but have yet to hear from him. I've heard different things on the Facebook group with some saying that a one way ticket will do and others have said that you must have a round trip ticket. Still others have said that you may or may not have to have a round trip ticket depending on the mood of the immigration officials at GND. Any advice that can be shared will be appreciated!

Questions about Moving to Grenada

Hey, I'm an incoming student for the January semester and just wanted to ask a couple of questions that could give me an idea of what to look for on the island.

1) I'm living off campus because I intend on having family move in with me later on. I was wondering what neighborhoods to look at that are relatively safe for students to live in and which neighborhoods are sketchier that I should probably stay away from? Names like LAE show up a lot, but I can't put them into a context of whether they're safe or 'meh'. And I'm not sure what neighborhoods are within a reasonable walking distance from the campus or how reliable the buses are in these areas.

2) I want to get my own vehicle for transportation. I probably won't buy a car until second semester, but is renting one an option? And if so, how much would I be looking at spending per month to rent something that could get me around the island (campus, shopping, maybe the beach, etc.)?

3) What kind of internet is there in terms of speed? Would it be suitable for streaming movies in HD? Downloading big files relatively quickly?

Thanks in advance for anyone that could help me out. Really excited about coming down next month, and just want to be prepared.

SGU Grenada vs KBTGSP

I know there are some very old threads on this topic, but I was wondering if there are any more recent grads or current students willing to share some thoughts and experiences on deciding between the Grenada campus program and KBTGSP (BESIDES the fact that with KBT it's private loans for the entire duration of your education and you can not do clinicals in NJ).

Some topics I'm curious about are:

1) Do students in the KBT benefit greatly from the smaller class size?

2) How much "global health" is really integrated in the program? (My background has been in global and preventive health, so this part of the program is really important to me)

3) Are there any differences in GPA or scores between the groups? Are there differences in the qualities of the programs in any way?

4) Anything else anyone would kindly like to share? (current students, grads who are paying back Sallie Mae loans, anyone)

I'm also worried about everyone getting distracted and flying off all over Europe. As much as I'd reallyy love to do that, I guess my main "pro" for staying on the relatively isolated Grenada campus is fewer distractions.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!!

Hey what are some really good residency programs that SGU grads tend to get in the field of IM and FM? Trying to aim my sights on some good primary care programs.

UK student accepted in MD/MBA

Hi everyone, i tried searching for thread for UK students who got accepted in MD program but i had no luck...so decided to start this new thread, i have few questions and i would love to get feedback from current students ( preferably UK students ). I will be starting my first semester in May 2016 in MD/MBA program, and after completion of my degree i am planning to return to UK and practice, but i spoke to someone in GMC which provides medical registration to doctors because i read on GMC website that from Jan 2016 EU requires foreign medical graduates to study at least 5 years of basic sciences ( including clerkship ) in order for primary medical qualification to be acceptable . Now i am lost and confused, i sent email to student advisor at SGU and awaiting reply because if this is the case then any student who graduate from SGU and wants to practice in UK won't not be able to register with medical council.

I would love to hear back from students who currently studying and are going back to UK to practice to see your thoughts on this.

Many thanks!!

Ex-SGU MD prog, now PA prog Please help

Hi everyone

Im so sorry for posting this here i know its for MD's only but im so desperate and today i almost withdrew my acceptance for the PA program. Ive posted in the Pa section but everyone was just so helpful at SGU when i was there i really feel i could get more input here. Basically i was at SGU on the MD prog for 1st semester and the decelled. Re-did first semester and then eventually withdrew.

How much easier is the PA program Vs MD program?

I recently applied and was accepted into a PA school but im terrified. I dont know what the pace of studying is going to be like or the volume of information we have to learn. A few years ago i was accepted into MD and was ecstatic but when i started, it all fell apart. I wish i could make an excuse as to why, but the the true honest reason was i just couldnt keep up with the studying involved. To do 3-4 hrs per night/5 days minimum of studying after a full school day and extra in weekends, was something completely alien to me. Ive never been a crammer of sorts but my academic history has always been a couple of hours here and there over the week, then maybe a month out of an exam where id get a few weeks off school and whole days to myself id put in 5 hrs of 4 days/week of studying max. I didnt last the first term in MD...i became depressed halfway through due to falling so far behind. I resat the term thinking i could start afresh but the same thing happened again. No matte how much i willed to do it i couldn't, i was constantly distracted and it just became more and more depressing as i fell behind. The writing was on the wall and i knew i had to call it quits. It sucks because i really want to be involved in this aspect of healthcare and do something with lots of patient contact which is why medicine was my first choice. During my MD interviews they told me it was my communication skills that got me in, and the same when i interviewed for PA and i definitely believe in that respect i can provide a valuable service. Its just my academic ability thats really holding me back.

By default we wont have to learn as much as MD school but, is it like doing half the amount or something like that?

Truth and rumors about SGU and AUC attrition rate

Hello everyone, I was going to apply to SGU and AUC this year with a STRONG preference for SGU. The debt really frighten me but at the same time I was telling myself that if I perform well I should get a residency because they match 700-800 residency per year and they are the "best carribean med...
