Appeal Letter Help

Hello,

I have been recommended for dismissal by the ECAPPS committee and I have a chance to appeal my dismissal in hopes of being retained. I'm trying to write my appeal but can't find how to present myself and what to present. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to include in an appeal letter?

[EDIT]: I passed my 1st term and failed my 2nd term. I also was advised to decelerate, but those to continue through in hopes of killing the final exams...but i didn't

Thanks

Hi all I am from Trinidad, therfore I do not need to take Mcat,.but I am reapplying for Sgu Med and I was wondering what are my chances

I was Pre med but was dismissed due to failing to meet academic requirements
My cumulative and science gpa was lower than required
I failed the Pre Med final (PMSCE) twice then I was dismissed
I had some stress from a family member undergoing some circumstances. I was asked to appeal but I did not,
l because I did not want to take the PMSCE for a 3rd time, so I accepted the dismissal and did biology instead

My stats are as follow:
Associate Degree in Natural Science 3.34 gpa
Biology Bsc 3.33 cumulative
Science 3.2
Do I have a chance if I reapply
I am really worried about the dismissal from pre med thing
I failed PMSCE twice and I did not appea
Do u think I have a chance?

Caribbean Train Ending

I wanted to write this for all the pre-meds that are deciding right now if going to the Caribbeans is worth it or not. Rejections/acceptance are coming about for medical school in the US, and now some of you guys are wondering if there are any alternatives. If you are doing your homework, you will probably stumble on this post. I believe it was around this time of the month I decided to apply to the original Top 3 Caribbean schools, and ended up with SGU at the end. Either way it doesn't matter, the match rates between the Top 3 is probably similar. The short end of the story is that the train is ending for us. Originally I didn't bother with DO schools, since I didn't want to do OMM, I felt like learning non-scientific based medicine is hogwash. Around 2012 there were still some residency programs that prefer Top 3 Caribbean kids over DO's. I can safely say that now the DO's have won the battle. Almost all programs will prefer a DO over Top 3 Caribbean kids.

I didn't match this year in Psychiatry. I have 235/225/CS. No LOAs/No failures/No Decels/US Citizen. Applied to 100 places (only IMG friendly places), ended up with 12 interviews, went on 10. Didn't match. And half my interviews were at places that were brand new, or were only been around for 1-2 years (not that I care, but just to let you know it wasn't a top heavy match list). Maybe it was a mixture of bad interview skills, or psychiatry getting more competitive. But overall, I am not alone in this, know some others that are IMGS with similar scores in this situation. Match or no match in the Psychiatry, or the hypothetical what if I apply to IM/FM? The issue really though is the places applied, and the interview return amount. In the interview trail, I ran into DO's that applied to only 30-40 places with 50% return rates on their application. And trust me their scores are worse. In the 210s/220s range with failures. Or they will only take the COMLEX 1 a test where their average 500 translate into 210s in Step 1 terms. This isn't to bash the DO's, but for you pre-meds that are tempted to skip the DO route and go to SGU. The discrimination you face as a IMG is tremendous. It doesn't matter if you do your rotations at the same hospitals a US MD or DO does, people will still think your education is inferior, and will automatically rank you below DO's and MD's. Ooh yeah..DO's rotations aren't as heavily scrutinized. Some of their rotations are done in private clinics such as surgery and IM where they don't need to do calls or even present patients. But no one will ever call them out on that, and still accuse your training as inferior BTW (even though all your rotations in Top 3 are at academic residency spots). Stereotypes of IMG's....

What makes DO's more desirable than Big Three Carib grads? | Student Doctor Network

"The pool of US applicants from the Caribbean is viewed differently by Program Directors. The DDx for a Caribbean grad is pretty off-putting: bad judgment, bad advice, egotism, gullibility, overbearing parents, inability to delay gratification, IA's, legal problems, weak research skills, high risk behavior. " Yeah this comment is from a DO faculty member. This isn't going to be a DO vs Top 3 Caribbean post, because simply DO wins automatically. I am not saying any of this to bash on DO's, but to show there is a huge stigma against IMGs, no matter if you are from a Top 3. The stigma should not be downplayed at all.

I personally have no complaints with basic science or the administration, that others have may complain about here. There is crime in Grenada, but it's still safer then Detroit or Chicago. Rotations were easy to set up, only if you are willing to relocate. I actually had a blast on the island, made lots of friends, studied, and partied. But the end goal is to get a residency after medical school. And really with the expansion of DO schools and MD schools, there isn't any room for us IMGs. I really don't know what else is there to say. I am just posting here to as a counter point to:

http://www.valuemd.com/american-univ...option-md.html

It's because when I applied in 2012, the only people that didn't match had multiple failures, low scores, or required a VISA. And to be honest if the above person was a DO... Guess what? J1 visa or not, one step 2ck failure, and low scores, he would of matched somewhere in a ACGME FM spot, or even IM. I am posting it here to really drill it in the heads of pre-meds out there not to come to a Caribbean medical school. The days of just scoring 220's/230's all passes, with no failures and matching somewhere is ending. There will be success stories of course. But the increase failure stories are going to just keep on coming. I owe 430k in student loans with a useless degree, and my resume is a wreck. Do you guys know what a Caribbean MD can do? Nothing. Leave MD on your resume? Overqualified, under trained. Take MD off your resume? 4 year gap.

So end of the day, just don't come to the Caribbeans. Go DO school. Go PA, or be a NP. If you have already paid your deposit already, just eat up the cost.

EDIT: If you are a pre-med thinking about going to the Caribbeans, and have more question. Just PM me. I promise I'll persuade you out of this yet if this post haven't done it.

Hi guys,
I'm a medical student from Europe just graduating the 3rd year out of a 6 years program (in English).
my stats:
- Med school GPA of 3.91 (did the WES eval).
- Dean's list award for the last 5 semesters.
- lots of extra curricular activities and research - in the medical field.
- strong medical LORs.
As an international student - no need of MCAT.

I applied to SGU MD/MSc dual degree program - August 2016 or January 2017.

What are my chances of direct entrance to the school of medicine? - considering the pre-requisites.
thanks a lot for your help, much appreciated!

Charter Foundation Program interview

I was recently notified that I will be interviewing for the Charter Foundation Program at SGU. I was actually hoping to place into this program as it's been a while since I've been in school. I have a few questions about the interview for anyone that has gone through it:

  1. Is it similar to the school of medicine interview?
  2. I expect them to grill me about my GPA/MCAT scores, however is this something that's going to make a big impact in the interview stage? I've been told that once you have an interview, the committee already knows your scores, they are now interested in YOU as a person. Is there truth to this at SGU/CFP? I.e are they likely to still reject me based on my scores at this point without regard to my interview performance?
  3. Does anyone know how many students who interview for CFP are admitted into the program? (or what proportion)

Honest Feedback About SGU

Hi everyone,

I am looking for honest, sincere feedback since this is such a big life decision. I know some of my questions have been asked before, but many have been answered several years ago and surely things have changed since then.

Here is my story. I am a biology major with a not so good GPA (science 2.8 cGPA 3.2 and I did average on the MCAT 506. I received an acceptance to SGU as well as an acceptance into an SMP program and I can still withdraw from one of them. Some of my family warned me against attending the Caribbean medical schools, but I had the opportunity to talk to the admissions adviser and she was very friendly. The alumni who I talked to was also very kind and successful.

The admissions counselor told me the match rate for SGU is very good with 91% of students matching, many of which into excellent programs including mount sinai and orthopedics. I was wondering if this is true because i"ve heard otherwise from some other people, but I trust the admissions counselor because she can't lie or else she would get into trouble. Thoughts?

Even though my GPA is low, people told me that the vast majority of SGU students who get weeded out are truly nontraditional students who haven't touched a textbook in some time. I am a traditional applicant so even though my GPA is low, I should have a much better ability to grasp the material and do well. Is that true folks? Will I have a better advantage?

Also the island life. I don't want to sound naive, but they really emphasized the nice beaches the the vacation-like atmosphere of the island. Obviously I'll be studying a whole lot, but does the island life really contribute to the experience, or are most people too busy studyng to go to the beach? Also, people said a few years ago that Grenada is a third world country? Is this true? I'll be living in the school dorms so will that matter?

And final question. Should I take up SGU or attend the SMP program and hope to apply for DO/MD? Do you think that Ill be able to handle the courses with my not so good test taking ability?

Any Advice

Hello to you all,
I have spent the better half of the last week reading through the forums and have gotten a good appreciation of what it takes to handle the course work at SGU. I am lucky enough to have gotten a placement in the Jan session. However this question is a little diffcult and I suspect the range of responses from people actually in the program may help me make a huge life decision.

I am not worried about moving to the island, nor am I worried about the work involved (as hard is it is to believe). My question is that I am an international student, I am non-tradtional in my path (I will be 30 when I enter SGU). Which means that placement in residency after completion is already going to be a challenge. Is this something that you guys feel is almost impossible to climb? I read on the forums that IMG placement in the US is getting tougher these days, so do you think its likely I will end up having to do FM? To be honest, I love FM and would not mind doing it. However is the stats similar for going to the UK? I much prefer going to practice and learn there than in the US so I wonder if any of you have taken that route?

Second, in choosing to do medicine I realize you have to sacrifice a lot of time and energy. I am aware of this, however being 30 I would eventually like to meet a girl and settle down (I got out of a relationship to chase my medical dream and the funny thing is when I got my acceptance I started thinking about relationships). Is this something I can kiss goodbye moving to the island and then with the subsequent rotations and residency? I worry about this more than anything, as silly as it sound. I don't ever want to regret my decision to enter medicine but is it possible to have a social life, in that you can meet someone? I am asking on the forum because honestly I do not many people on the island who have completed the program and most who I know have graduated give me mixed advice.

I appreciate any help on this matter and to all of you on the island right now, I hope you guys are kicking *** in class.

Cars in SGU/Grenada

$

Hello. I was wondering if someone could tell me some information about the situation with bringing cars in here. I tried contacting the government office and SGU, but they didn't reply. So, I know this is an island, and they charge fees to bring things over. I want to bring over my 2002 honda civic, which will allow me a greater range of places to live. I don't want to buy any of the cars I saw listed because they look like they will likely break down soon and are exorbitantly expensive. My question is thus, what is the expense of bringing a car over? Ignoring the cost to transport from NY, once in Grenada, how much do the customs people charge for allowing me to bring in a car? And does anyone know any agents? I have heard they can get preferential deals, although I don't know if that is true.

On a side note, I read recently about things like Ross's toilets overflowing, etc. SGU is a fairly large school with a large number of people. What is the situation like with the restrooms? Are there a lot of them, and are they clean? Or are they few and far between, and filthy?

This is of course mainly a question about the car situation in Grenada. I want to know about the fees associated with bringing a car into the country.

Future SGU student. Looking for simple objective answers. All input appreciated.

Im Scared and I'm looking for hope/positivity

I graduated undergrad with an absolutely terrible GPA. A 2.0. This was almost two years ago. I am now 26 and I am working full time in the corporate pharmaceuticals industry. I screwed around a lot in undergrad and didn't care about school. Now I am a bit more serious with life and want to become a doctor. Realistically SGU is my only feasible option. There is no way that I would ever be competitive for a US MD school, and even for a DO school it will take at least 2-3 years of GPA repair to be competitive. I don't want to start med school when I'm 30 which I don't want to do.

I'm in the process of doing some post bac classes that I'm doing very well in right now, and also studying hard for the MCAT. My main concern is being able to match into a residency after 4 years.

Based on some of the threads here, it seems like in a few years Carib grads will be completely obsolete from the match process. Is this true?

Obviously I'm not looking to be the country's top plastic surgeon, spinal surgeon, and/or dermatologist. Im not looking to end up in some tiny rural hospital in the middle of nowhere either. Im not asking for a residency at Harvard or Johns Hopkins, I just want to land a decent residency in a safe metropolitan area. Thats it. It seems like this is going to be impossible in the near future, is this true?

In terms of specialties, surgical specialties are gone because of the fact that I'm a Carib grad. Although I would be happy with an IM/FM residnecy, my dream fields are Anesthesiology, Neurology, Oncology, and Emergency Medicine. Are there successful SGU grads who have managed to land these residencies in the recent past? What will it take for me to make this dream of mine a reality coming from a Caribbean school?

Thanks.

A Word of Caution about Health Insurance

$
0
0
Just a word of caution for those who have Health Insurance through SGU:
I was aware that Health Insurance fees were part of my annual fees for SGU School of Medicine. I had a minor skin condition and decided to go to the
local Urgent Care now that I am on break and in the States. I called WEA first,
and when I asked about details of coverage, they transferred me to another Health Insurer, I think it was United. The lady asked for my Insurance number, and I gave it to her, then she said she needed to know the "Tax ID" for the Hospital I was going to in order to help me.
Flabbergasted,I asked "Do you really expect me to know that?" She finally admitted that was
unrealistic and told me to have the hospital call when I arrived.
When I went to Urgent Care an hour later things were even more confusing.
The secretary told me she had never heard of WEA or WEA-Mercer and she
refused to try to get in touch with them on the phone. After feeling like I was getting the runaround I just asked what the standard fee was and decided to put the Insurance on hold and get the medical problem I had looked at by a physician. Imagine if this was a serious problem or emergency and you had hospital administrators telling you they never heard of WEA and you had WEA on the phone transferring you to peripheral Insurance Providers, passing the buck. Not exactly what we had in mind when we signed up for Health Insurance.
Maybe we deserve a little more transparency, in order to avoid "the runaround."

When should I apply to SGU August 2017

Hello all,
I was wondering what's the best time to apply to SGU for the August 2017 session.

My cGPA is 3.25 and my sGPA is 2.95. 400+ hours volunteering in a hospital, 100 hours shadowing and exec of a club.

I have my MCAT scheduled for March 31st. Is it okay to apply in late april for August 2017 session or should I apply for the 2018 Jan session.

What is the attrition rate at SGU? Also what % in classes is required to pass?

Saba, Ross and the like seem to have horrible attrition rates. What would you say is SGU? I heard profs actually tell people during their first classes people won't make it.
